Application: Transformer Oil Purifier & Transformer Dry-out System

This system is a trailerized-vacuum oil purifier for use with transformer oil and other dielectric fluids. It is a self-contained system that can be parked close to the oil and transformer to be processed, connected to power and put to work.

System Performance: 

Transformer oil containing up to 12% of dissolved gas and 100 PPM total water content shall be degasified and dehydrated in a single pass.

Function:

The system is designed to process transformer oil while the transformer remains online. Through the time-proven and superior technology of vacuum processing the unit treats electrical insulating oil to remove particulate, moisture, and dissolved gases. This complete treatment solution for the oil has the further effect of suppressing water content levels low enough to improve the moisture levels in the transformer insulation system. 

System Flow Rate:

600 gallons per hour (GPH) The nominal flow rate is adjustable from 0-100 percent of the flow by simply adjusting the outlet valve. The system automatically internally returns excess flow to the inlet of the system (automatic recirculation, single valve operation). 

Typical Operating Pressure is up to 45 PSIG at the discharge system with a typical operating temperature range from 40-110 degrees Farenheit.

Threaded connections are eliminated except for component removal where flanged components are not available. All ball valves have stainless steel balls with teflon seals. The entire system is mounted on a reinforced structural steel base with integral drip pan to collect any oil that may be accidentally spilt during filter element or vacuum pump fluid change-out. Mounted in a fully enclosed trailer with under trailer air inlets for optional forced air cooling system. The system comes with complete with 40' inlet and outlet oil hoses, 50' power cable, and operating/maintenance manual on CD or online access through the Baron Circle.

Application: Trap and Freeze Water During Transformer Dryout

For use with either dry ice & acetone mixture or liquid nitrogen. 

System Includes: 

  • All aluminum construction to minimize handling weight. 
  • Spare thimble to allow continuous operation while main thimble defrosts. 
  • Vacuum break and bypass valving to allow changing of thimble without interruption of process. 
  • 20 gallon canister capacity. 
  • Approximately 1200 square inches of ice retaining surface. With 1/2" of ice buildup, that amounts to about 2 gallons of water.

Application: Trap and Freeze Water During Transformer Dryout

This rental model is a dual stage cascaded non-CFC cold trap for transformer dryout. This automated system reaches an end point of -65 degrees Celsius for collection and measurement of the moisture removed from the transformer. 

Skid-mounted and designed with a operating pressure for full vacuum at 15 PSIG. Operating temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit with a 5,000 BTU/Hour condensing unit capacity.

The system is designed to process: electrical insulating oils – including mineral-based, FR3, Biotemp and others – to remove particulate, moisture, and dissolved gasses and has the following operational characteristics:

System Flow Rate: The flow rates below are adjustable from 0 to maximum by simply adjusting the outlet valve. The system automatically internally returns any excess flow to the inlet of the system (automatic re-circulation, single valve operation).

Typical Operating Oil Pressure: 45 PSIG at the discharge of the system.

BARON design criteria requires that pressure vessels be designed for 100 PSI and the filter housing and heater assembly are hydrostatically tested to 150 PSI.

Typical Operating Temperature Range: 40 – 180 F.

BARON design criteria requires that components be deigned for operation up to 250 F.

Typical Vacuum Levels: 5 torr to less than .2 torr (5000 microns to 200 microns) in the vacuum chamber during normal operation range.

Typical Filtration Levels: 1 micron or less for the inlet filter and 0.5 micron or less for the final filter.

The filter housings are designed to accept the standard 6” x 18 “ pleated filter elements readily available from BARON or from most other major filter element manufacturers.

Piping: All steel welded pipe insures years of leak free service. Threaded connections are eliminated except for component removal where flanged components are not available. All ball valves have stainless steel balls with teflon seals. Butterfly valves are used for vacuum service and have viton seats and seals.

F.E. TREATMENT OF OIL RESULTS IN:

FULLERS EARTH: can be used to decolorize and neutralize any petroleum oil, especially electrical insulating oils.  It excels in neutralizing traces of strong inorganic acid.  Due to the relatively large pores in fullers earth, it is well adapted to the removal of high molecular weight sulfonates, resins, and asphaltines.

OXIDATION:  Transformer oil will discolor as oxidation of the oil takes place. Color, by itself, is not a reliable test in evaluating the condition of the oil for further use.  It is a strong indication that something is happening within the transformer that requires investigation.  Once transformer oil changes from the yellow color range into the orange and red color range, it has degraded to the point where the vital parts of the transformer are being seriously affected.

OXIDATION PRODUCTS:  As the color of the oil changes, sludge is forming in solution with the oil due to oxidation.  This causes a drop in interfacial tension and an increase in the acid (neutralization) number.  When transformer oil deteriorates to the red color ranges, depos­ited sludge continues to oxidize and harden, blocking vents and insulating cooling fins, causing higher operating tempe­ratures.  Insulation shrinkage may take place, and prema­ture failure is possible. 

BENEFITS OF FULLERS EARTH TREATMENT:  Maintaining oil quality with a Baron high vacuum fluid purification system helps increase oil life, improves equipment performance, reduces downtime and reduces oil disposal and replacement costs.  In conjunction with the dehydration, degasification and filtration provided by a Baron transformer oil purifier, Baron Fullers Earth systems are used to correct the additional challenges with oxidized oils as discussed above.

Size and Configurations:

     Size: 500 pounds of fullers earth per tower x two towers for a total capacity of 1,000 lbs.  This allows optimum usage of the clay as well as change-out of the charge in one filter while the other is still in use.

     Portability: system has hydraulic tilt and dump.  This allows it to be used at floor/ground level or it can be set in the rear of a trailer so that clay can be dumped out the rear.

     Modularized: module requires hot (160 – 180 Deg F) transformer oil at about 70 – 80 psig pressure.  This is readily available through the standard fullers earth manifold provided as an integral part of Baron vacuum oil purification systems.

     Stand-alone system: can be used with an existing purifier or another pressurized hot oil source.  It can be set on the floor or ground or in the back of a trailer for portability.

Construction and Features:

     Support Frame: Each clay filter is rigidly mounted in a frame that allows for dumping of the spent clay.

     A vacuum fill port is provided for connection to a locally-mounted vacuum pump for clay loading.

     Pressure gauges are provided on both inlet and outlet lines to the filters.

     A flow-sight indicator is provided to monitor flow conditions and purified oil color.

The most efficient use of the clay is obtained by running the towers in series.  The lead tower is the roughing filter and the second tower performs the polishing.  When the clay in the lead filter is spent, it is changed and the series flow reversed to make the freshly charged tower the polishing unit and the former polishing unit the roughing filter.

The BA-FPS-HV-75H system is designed to process new and used electrical insulating oil; mineral-based, silicone, FR3 and others.  The unit will remove particulate, moisture, and dissolved gasses.  Maintaining oil quality with the Baron FPS system helps to increase oil life, improve equipment performance, reduce disposal & replacement cost.
